What silverfish actually are, and why the Gold Coast suits them
Silverfish are small, wingless, silver-grey insects that favour dark, humid spaces, exactly the conditions a Gold Coast home can offer year round given the region's climate. They feed on starchy materials, paper, book bindings, wallpaper glue and some fabrics, and are most active at night, which is why an infestation can be well established before anyone notices.
Where to look
Bathrooms, laundries, roof cavities, storage boxes and bookshelves are the usual spots, anywhere combining moisture with something starchy to feed on. A build-up of shed skin or small irregular holes in paper or fabric are often the first visible sign, ahead of actually seeing the insect itself.
Reducing humidity is the real fix
Killing the silverfish you can see does not address why they are there in the first place. Reducing humidity in the areas they favour, better ventilation, a dehumidifier, fixing any damp source, has more lasting impact than repeated spot treatment, since new silverfish will keep moving in while the conditions stay the same.
When to bring in professional treatment
