Coffee on carpet, act fast: blot up as much liquid as possible, then mix 1 cup warm water with 1 teaspoon dishwashing liquid and 1 teaspoon white vinegar. Dab, never rub, and blot until the colour stops transferring. Fresh spills on synthetic carpet usually lift fully. Dried stains, and milky coffee or lattes, need a different approach, and wool blends need low moisture treatment to avoid browning.

Why coffee stains carpet so fast
Coffee contains tannins, the same staining compound found in red wine and black tea. Tannins bond to carpet fibre quickly, which is why a fresh spill treated in the first few minutes behaves very differently to one left to dry. Milky coffee and lattes add a second problem: dairy proteins and sugar left behind in the fibre, which can sour and attract new dirt even after the visible stain is gone.
The method for a fresh spill
Blot up the liquid. White paper towel or a clean white cloth, pressing and lifting, working from the outside of the spill inward.
Mix the solution. 1 cup warm water, 1 teaspoon dishwashing liquid and 1 teaspoon white vinegar.
Dab, never rub. Apply with a cloth, dab gently, blot dry. Repeat until no more colour lifts onto the cloth.
Rinse and dry. Dab with a cloth dampened in plain cool water to remove any soap residue, then blot thoroughly dry to stop a new dirt attracting residue being left behind.
What never to do
Do not use hot water. Heat sets tannin stains, the same rule that applies to wine and tea.
Do not rub or scrub. It drives the stain deeper into the pile and frays the fibre.
Do not reach for bleach or a carpet "miracle" spray on an unknown fibre. We regularly see carpets where the spray caused more permanent damage than the coffee.
Milky coffee and lattes are different
A flat white or latte spill is not just a tannin stain. The milk solids need to be fully rinsed out, not just blotted, or the spot can sour and darken again days later even though it looked clean at the time. If a milky spill has been sitting for more than an hour or two, treat it as a set in stain rather than a fresh one.
When DIY will not cut it
If the stain has fully dried, if the carpet is wool or a wool blend, or if a shadow remains after two attempts, stop before you make it worse. Dried coffee on wool is a professional low moisture treatment matched to the fibre, and even professionally, removal depends on the stain, how long it has set and the fibre type. We will give you the honest likelihood before we start, no guarantees, just an accurate assessment.

Got questions? Straight answers below. Or skip ahead:
No. Coffee contains tannins, the same staining compound in tea and wine, and hot water sets tannin stains rather than lifting them. Always use cool or warm water, never hot.
Can a dried coffee stain be removed once it has set in?
Sometimes, depending on the fibre and how long it has been there. Wool blends are far less forgiving than synthetic carpet. A set in coffee stain is a professional low moisture treatment, and even then removal cannot be guaranteed, we will give you an honest assessment before starting.
Is a milky coffee or latte spill harder to remove than black coffee?
Yes. Milk and sugar leave a residue behind even after the visible stain lifts, and that residue can sour and attract new dirt if it is not fully rinsed out, not just blotted.
Is the vinegar and dish soap method safe on wool carpet?
Use it sparingly and test an inconspicuous spot first. Wool is more sensitive to overwetting than synthetic fibre. For anything beyond a very fresh, light spill on wool, it is safer to call a professional than risk browning the fibre.
