What is actually living in your mattress

Are you sleeping with more than you think? Not people. Bacteria. Dust mites. Years of accumulated biological matter that no sheet wash can reach. You spend roughly eight hours a night in your bed, and over months and years a mattress becomes one of the most contaminated surfaces in your home. Most people have no idea until they see it under UV light.

Dust mites are not parasites and do not bite, but their waste products and shed body parts are among the most potent indoor allergens known. For anyone with asthma, eczema, hay fever or respiratory sensitivities, a mattress that has never been professionally cleaned is a significant ongoing trigger. A cheap spray or a standard vacuum will not address what is deep in the mattress fibre.

What happens during a professional mattress clean

We clean mattresses in place. Please strip the bed of all sheets, pillowcases and mattress protectors before we arrive so we have clear access to the surface. Everything else we handle on site.

Inspection first

We inspect the mattress with you before we start: the staining, the fibre type, and any specific concerns you have raised. Where appropriate we can use UV light detection to identify biological contamination, including urine that is not visible in normal light. Just ask when you book. Our commitment on every job is this: we will get your mattress hygienically clean. We cannot always restore the aesthetic appearance fully, and we tell you that before we start, not after.

The cleaning process

  1. Pre-treatment: appropriate products applied based on fibre type and the nature of any staining
  2. Hot steam extraction: hot water and professional cleaning product injected into the mattress fibre under pressure and extracted simultaneously, removing bacteria, allergens, body oils, dust mite debris and accumulated soiling
  3. Enzymatic or antibacterial treatment: applied where urine or biological contamination is present. The enzyme product breaks down organic matter at a molecular level and continues working after we leave
  4. pH rinse: a neutralising rinse restores the fibre to its preferred pH balance, just as we do with carpets
  5. Post-clean product: applied to stained areas after the clean, continuing to work over the following days and in some cases improving the aesthetic result over time

Drying time

Your mattress will be damp after cleaning, not saturated. In most cases drying takes four to six hours with normal ventilation. A ceiling fan running above the bed reduces this significantly. We do not recommend sleeping on the mattress until it is fully dry.

Urine on a mattress: honest expectations

Urine accidents are the most common reason people call us for a mattress clean. Usually it is a young child, sometimes a pet, and often a stressed parent who wants it fixed immediately. Here is the honest position.

What we can address

  • Fresh accidents: the earlier we get to it, the better. Recent accidents that have not set respond well to enzymatic treatment and extraction
  • Odour: antibacterial enzyme treatment breaks down the uric acid crystals that cause the smell. In most cases the odour is fully resolved
  • Bacterial contamination: fully addressed by the hot steam extraction and antibacterial treatment combination

What we cannot guarantee

  • Stains from urine that has set into the fibre over time may not fully lift aesthetically
  • Post-clean products continue working over the following days and can improve the visual result, but we will not promise a result we cannot guarantee
  • If a stain does not lift, you have still received a hygienically clean mattress that is safe to sleep on
Why a spray is not a clean: a fragrance spray or cheap mattress spray covers the surface odour temporarily and leaves the bacterial contamination, the uric acid and the accumulated soiling exactly where it was. Your child is still sleeping on it. A professional clean with antibacterial enzyme treatment addresses the actual problem.

Dust mites, allergens and allergy sufferers

Dust mites live in the warm, humid, skin rich environment of your mattress and are almost impossible to eliminate through washing and vacuuming alone. The hot steam extraction process uses temperatures that are lethal to dust mites, and the extraction removes the physical debris, including the waste particles that cause allergic reactions, from within the mattress fibre. If you or a family member has unexplained sneezing, congestion, skin irritation or respiratory symptoms that worsen at night or first thing in the morning, the mattress is one of the first places to look.

Hypoallergenic cleaning for sensitive customers

For customers with chemical sensitivities, asthma or allergic conditions, we have access to professional grade hypoallergenic products. These are fragrance free and contain no harsh chemical compounds, cleaning and sanitising to the same standard without any scent or residue that could trigger a reaction. Let us know when you book if this applies to your household.

Mattress cleaning pricing

Every mattress clean includes hot steam extraction, antibacterial treatment and the pH neutralising rinse, with dust mite elimination through steam heat included as standard. Multiple mattresses cleaned in the same visit attract a combined rate. Call 1300 85 48 28 to discuss pricing for your situation.

Frequently asked questions

How often should a mattress be professionally cleaned?
For most households, once every 12 months is a reasonable interval. Homes with young children, pets on the bed, or allergy sufferers benefit from cleaning every six months. A mattress that has had a specific incident such as urine or significant staining should be cleaned promptly rather than waiting for a scheduled interval.
Can you remove urine stains from a mattress?
In some cases yes, in others no. Fresh accidents that have not set respond better than old staining. We apply enzymatic treatment that breaks down the uric acid and organic matter, and a post-clean product that continues working over the following days and can improve the aesthetic result over time. We will tell you honestly what to expect during the inspection before we start. What we can guarantee regardless of the stain outcome is that the mattress will be hygienically clean after the treatment.
Can you remove the smell of urine from a mattress?
In most cases yes. Antibacterial enzyme treatment breaks down the uric acid crystals that produce the smell. For deep seated contamination that has penetrated into the inner foam of the mattress, a follow-up topical treatment may be needed. We assess the depth of the contamination during the inspection and advise you accordingly.
How long does a mattress take to dry after cleaning?
Four to six hours in most cases with normal ventilation. A ceiling fan running above the bed reduces drying time significantly. We recommend not sleeping on the mattress until it is fully dry to the touch.
Do you clean the mattress in place or do I need to move it?
We clean the mattress in place. Please strip the bed of all sheets, pillowcases and mattress protectors before we arrive. That is all the preparation required on your end. Everything else is handled on site.
Does professional mattress cleaning kill dust mites?
Yes. The hot steam extraction process uses temperatures that are lethal to dust mites. The industrial extraction also removes the physical allergens, including dust mite waste products and shed body particles, from deep within the mattress fibre. For allergy sufferers, this is often the most meaningful outcome of the clean.
I am getting bitten in bed. Is it dust mites or bed bugs?
Dust mites do not bite. They feed on shed skin cells, not on living skin. If you are getting bitten in bed, the cause is more likely to be bed bugs or fleas, not dust mites. We can inspect for bed bugs during the job and advise on whether treatment is required. Bed bug treatment is a separate service from a standard mattress clean and is costed individually based on the extent of the infestation.
Are the cleaning products safe for children and people with allergies?
Yes. We use low toxicity, professional grade products on all mattress jobs. For customers with chemical sensitivities, asthma or allergic conditions, we have access to hypoallergenic, fragrance free products that clean and sanitise to the same standard without any scent or chemical residue. Let us know at booking if this applies to your household.
Can you clean a memory foam or latex mattress?
Yes, with product and method adjustments. Memory foam and latex mattresses are moisture sensitive and require a lower moisture approach to avoid compromising the structure. We adjust our cleaning process based on the mattress type identified during the inspection.
What is the UV light detection for?
UV light reveals biological contamination on the mattress surface, including urine that is invisible in normal light. It shows exactly where contamination is present before treatment begins. We offer it as an optional part of the service. Most customers who request it find it eye opening, and many make professional mattress cleaning a regular part of their home maintenance as a result. If you would like UV detection included, just mention it when you book.
Do you service my area?
We service the Gold Coast from Tweed Heads north through to Coomera and surrounding areas, including hinterland suburbs on request. Call us on 1300 85 48 28 to confirm.
